Characteristics of a Christian

Guidance and the Voice of God, a great book, outlines some of the characteristics in determining what to look for in a church, in order to be weary of wrong teachings and preaching.  It describes three areas to look for in the people of the church, and discerning real Christians from “counterfeit” ones.  Similarly, we can use this outline to make sure we are on track in our Christian walk.

  1. Justification by Faith
In Galatians 1:1-10, Paul emphasises that salvation (being saved from God’s wrath because of our sin) occurs through putting our trust in God and NOT by doing good works.
  2. The Real Jesus
The true Christian embraces a Jesus who is the Christ and the Lord of all; that he was sent by God to earth, took the form of man and obediently took our punishment for the sins we committed (Philippians 2:6-11)
  3. The Bible
We use the bible to understand God; God speaks to us through the bible. The Bible must be our source of all information and authority; it helps us to discern right teaching from wrong teaching.
  • “We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us.  This is how we recognise the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.” 1 John 4:6
  • “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” 2 Tim 3:16-17

So to make sure we are on track, we have to ask ourselves, 1) Do I believe justification by faith? 2) Do I believe in Jesus? and what He did to save me? 3) Do I believe in the authority of the bible?

Voice of the Martyrs

Posted in Uncategorized on June 2, 2009 by BillyL

Mikey did a book review on Saturday night and mentioned the newsletter by Voice of the Martyrs he subscribes to.

You can check out Voice of the Martyrs at http://www.persecution.com.au

Subscribe to them and you can get newsletters in your letterbox or subscribe to their prayer mailing list to get notified of prayer alerts in your email with regard to the persecution of Christians overseas.

Here’s a taste of the latest news article on their website:

“Jesus told me to go. He never said I would come back. Isn’t this the life of a Christian?” At nearly 70 years of age, Celso is full of life and actively evangelises in dangerous areas of Colombia. His smile is contagious and his testimony is amazing.

You can read about testimonies like Celso’s and so many more in their newsletters. What’s even better is having the privilege to partake in God’s work through intercessory prayer for these Christians who are being persecuted for their faith – something we’ll never really face here in Australia.

You can add them to your prayer list and get valuable information about countries that have christians being persecuted for their faith. Check it out now!
